Air Pollution in NYC Hits Hazardous Highs As Winds Carry Smoke from Canada Wildfires Across the Northeastern United States

New York, NY — Severe pollution originating from Canadian wildfire smoke has settled over New York City, leading to hazardously high air pollution levels in Queens and “very unhealthy” pollutant concentrations in the other four boroughs, according to Air Quality Index Data on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. The City of New York has issued an air quality advisory for the entire city, cautioning New Yorkers to stay indoors as much as possible, while haze and poor visibility conditions have caused the FAA to impose a ground stop at LaGuardia Airport.

“Wildfires in the U.S. mainly impact the west coast and northern states, but their smoke can travel hundreds or thousands of miles, leading to hazy conditions and poor air quality even far from the fire,” says Mark Davidson, Manager of Marketing and Technical Materials at Camfil, a global air filtration manufacturing company that provides pharmaceutical-grade air filters and purifiers to the medical, industrial, residential, commercial, and public sectors, “The current air quality situation in New York (and in other U.S. cities such as Washington D.C.) is an example of how wildfire smoke can be carried far from the source of the wildfire and affect air quality all over North America.”

Air filtration professionals from Camfil have provided a resource explaining what steps residents of New York City and other east coast cities affected by 2023 wildfire smoke pollution should take to protect their lungs from dangerous pollutants.

The resource covers the following topics:

  • What do Air Quality Index (AQI) scores mean?

  • How does wildfire smoke affect air quality?

  • Why does wildfire smoke pollution affect New York?

  • What pollutants are found in wildfire smoke?

  • What steps do experts recommend to protect your lungs against wildfire smoke pollution?
